Youth Poetry Workshop on Veterans Day
Middle schoolers invited to learn ancient Greek Ekphrasis, the art about poetry

ROSEVILLE, Calif., October 7, 2009—The Blue Line Gallery will present “Art about Poetry,” a workshop for middle school youth, on November 11.

In “Art about Poetry,” poet and former newspaper editor John Bowman will teach young adults about Ekphrasis, an ancient Greek style of poetry that connects writing to art. Participants will be engaged in discussion of poetry and art, study the origins and early examples of Ekphrasis, then write poetry about their favorite art in the gallery. Bowman will guide the youth through readings of their poetry and encourage them to share their reactions to these poems.  Finally, students will have the option to leave a copy of their poetry for display next to the artwork described.  The resulting examples of Ekphrasis will be celebrated with a reception at the gallery on Saturday, November 21, 6:30-9:00 p.m. , and will remain in the gallery through January 8, 2010.

“Poetry about Art” is open to all youth, 6-8th grades.  The workshop will be held on November 11, 9:00-11:30am, at the Blue Line Gallery, 405 Vernon Street in Roseville.  A $25 fee for Roseville Arts members ($35 for non-members) will be collected. All proceeds will support ongoing children and youth programs presented by Roseville Arts Blue Line Gallery to its community.  Registration forms available online at www.rosevillearts.org or at the Blue Line Gallery.
